Chapter twelve

Different Worlds

A heavy knock woke Rhiannon from her sleep. She hazily recognized that the rain had stopped at some point during the wee hours of the morning. The knock repeated, louder this time.

“I am coming!” she said as she forced herself to sit up in bed.

She muttered a few choice words under her breath as she rubbed the sleep from her eyes.

“Meet me in the Great Hall,” Conor called through the door, “and get moving; we have many miles to cover before nightfall.”

Rhiannon cursed again as she realized the sun had already risen over the mountains; the inappropriate words were starting to become a habit. She leapt out of bed, slightly concerned that Conor would simply leave her behind if she were not ready soon. With haste, she stifled a yawn and changed out of the extra-large shirt she used as a nightgown. She put on warm wool pants and a light blue top. Her agitation grew and her stomach churned as she fumbled with her long hair.

Another knock came at the door and Rhiannon hurried over to answer, her hair half undone. She thrust it open, breathing a sigh of relief at the sight of Brynn on the other side.

“Was that my brother I heard so rudely yelling at you through the door?” Brynn asked.

Rhiannon grimaced. “Yes, I had planned to be up and ready by now but I… overslept.”

“Here, at least let me help you with your hair,” Brynn said as Rhiannon stepped back to let her through the door. “It’s going to be a hard ride to Gleann.”

With Brynn’s assistance, Rhiannon plaited her hair into a simple braid and pinned it into a spiral bun at the nape of her neck. The two women made their way to the Great Hall, which bustled with activity as they entered. Leif was noticeably absent, but Aeron, Macsen, Finn, and Conor were all gathered around one of the tables, eating the morning meal.

Over by the firepit, the wolves scarfed down their breakfast of raw meat, and Rhiannon’s stomach at least did not turn as it once had when she and Brynn passed them. The usual morning fare was set up at the table closest to the kitchen and the two women served themselves steaming hot bowls of thick porridge.

“Good of you to finally join us,” Conor said to Rhiannon as she and Brynn walked up to the table. “I would recommend eating your fill; we have a long day ahead of us and we’re already behind.”

Brynn narrowed her eyes at him. “Lay off, Conor.”

Conor looked down at the bowl in front of him, his movements stiff as he continued to eat. Rhiannon pointedly took the seat next to Finn, and Brynn settled on her other side. She blew on the wooden spoon to cool the gelatinous liquid before taking a bite; it was still far from one of her favorite meals, but with the regularity with which they had it, she was finding it more edible.

“Did you sleep well last night?” Finn asked.
